During the critical years of transition from childhood to adolescence, girls aged 8 to 14 often experience a noticeable drop in confidence. Research suggests that this decline is influenced by various social pressures, particularly the expectation to be kind, helpful and conforming. These pressures can stifle girls’ self-expression, reduce their willingness to take risks, and ultimately impact their future success and confidence.

The Confidence Gap: Understanding the Decline

As girls enter their pre-teen years, many begin to internalise societal expectations that dictate how they should behave. The messages they receive from family, peers, and media – often emphasise the importance of being nice, obedient, and helpful. While these qualities are undoubtedly valuable, the pressure to embody them can lead to a loss of self-identity and confidence.

Girls may find themselves prioritising the needs and feelings of others above their own, fearing that assertiveness or independence might be perceived as selfish or unkind. This internal conflict can create a hesitance to express their opinions or pursue their interests, ultimately resulting in a decline in confidence.

The Impact on Risk-Taking

Research shows that girls are less likely than boys to take risks, particularly during the formative years of 8 to 14. This tendency to avoid risks can be traced back to the social conditioning that encourages girls to be compliant and conform to expectations. Whether in academics, sports, or social situations, girls may hold back from seizing opportunities that could lead to growth and development.

This reluctance to take risks can have lasting consequences. The skills and experiences gained from taking on challenges are essential for building resilience and confidence. When girls shy away from these experiences, they miss out on valuable lessons about overcoming obstacles, learning from failures, and developing a strong sense of self.

The Long-Term Consequences

The confidence drop and risk-averse behaviour observed in girls during these years can have significant implications for their future success. Girls who do not engage in risk-taking may miss opportunities to develop leadership skills, pursue their passions, or explore new interests. This can lead to a lack of confidence in their abilities, making it harder for them to advocate for themselves in later life, whether in academics, careers, or personal relationships.

The Need for Early Intervention

Addressing the confidence drop in girls and fostering a culture of resilience and independence requires early intervention. At Fearless Girls Club, we are committed to tackling this issue head-on. We aim to create an empowering environment where girls are encouraged to be bold and live fearlessly.

5 Ways Fearless Girls Club Builds Confidence in Our Sessions

1.     Encouraging individual expression: At Fearless Girls Club, we create a safe space for girls to express their thoughts and feelings. During our sessions, we facilitate open discussions where girls can share their opinions and experiences, helping them feel heard and valued.

2.     Promoting risk-taking: We believe that taking risks is essential for building confidence. Our club provides opportunities for girls to try new activities where we celebrate efforts and achievements, regardless of the outcome, to help our girls develop a positive mindset towards challenges.

3.     Teaching resilience skills: Our Club is designed to teach girls valuable resilience skills, including problem-solving and decision-making. We focus on empowering them to navigate challenges and setbacks, equipping them with the confidence to face future obstacles head-on.

4.     Modelling fearless behaviour: We understand the importance of role models. Our Quest Leaders demonstrate confidence and resilience and by showcasing these qualities, we inspire our girls to embrace their own strength and independence.

5.     Fostering supportive communities: Fearless Girls Club emphasises the importance of connection. We create a unique environment where girls can engage with peers and mentors who encourage them to be their authentic selves. Our collaborative approach helps girls feel connected and more empowered, building a strong community of support.

By providing the tools and support needed for resilience and independence, we can help girls thrive and become the strong, confident leaders of tomorrow.
