After we’ve enthusiastically belted out our club affirmations (I am brave! I am bold! I am fearless!), we begin every session with a simple ritual: One Good Thing. Each girl takes a turn to share something positive from her week, whether it’s finishing a tricky piece of homework, trying a new activity or doing something fun with friends.

It might look like a quick icebreaker, but there’s a lot happening beneath the surface. This small act of sharing supports our bigger aim: equipping girls with the tools to think and act fearlessly.
Building confidence in speaking
For many girls, speaking up in front of others can feel daunting. One Good Thing creates a safe, supportive space to practise this skill regularly. Over time, they grow more comfortable using their voice, making eye contact and sharing their thoughts – the very building blocks of confident communication.
Encouraging reflection and recognition
School and home life move quickly and small achievements can easily slip by unnoticed. Pausing to reflect helps girls recognise their own progress and take pride in it. This sense of recognition builds resilience and self-belief: vital qualities for navigating challenges as they grow.
Celebrating effort and achievement
Sharing success with peers – and being met with encouragement – reinforces the idea that their efforts and achievements matter. Whether the moment is big or small, the circle’s response shows each girl that she is valued and supported. Just as importantly, she learns to listen and celebrate others, building empathy and connection.
Laying the foundations for fearlessness
Fearlessness is about recognising your strengths, daring to use your voice and stepping forward even when you feel uncertain. With every round of One Good Thing, girls are practising exactly that. They’re learning that their voice has power, that their experiences matter and that they can be proud of who they are.
So when our sessions start with a circle of stories from the week, it might look like just a warm-up, but it’s a carefully designed practice to nurture confidence, pride and courage – one good thing at a time!
